BEFORE.

Standing 152 metres above Birmingham, BT Tower is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks – so replacing its high-level signage was never going to be an ordinary installation.

Media Abseiling was tasked with removing the existing signage, preparing and repainting the surface, and installing the new logo high above the city.

The scale and location presented an obvious access challenge. Rather than relying on extensive scaffolding or large cranes, the entire project was planned and delivered using industrial rope access.

This allowed our technicians to reach the working areas directly while significantly reducing the equipment and infrastructure required at ground level.

REMOVAL & PREP.

Before installation could begin, our rope access team carried out a detailed survey of the existing signage and surrounding structure.

Working at height, the team assessed the existing installation and planned how each component could be safely removed and the new signage positioned.

With the survey complete, work could begin on transforming the tower.

Removal & Preparation

The existing signage was carefully removed section by section using rope access techniques.

Once removed, the team was left with another challenge: preparing the building itself for its new identity.

The exposed wall behind the original signage was prepared and painted by hand, with our technicians completing the work while suspended on ropes.

Only once the surface had been properly prepared could installation of the new logo begin.

INSTALLING NEW LOGO.

Given its enormous finished size, the new signage couldn’t simply arrive as a single piece.

The main logo was divided into eight separate sections, while the circular element was manufactured in a further nine individual pieces.

Each component had to be individually lifted, controlled and positioned at height before being carefully aligned with the surrounding sections.

Precision was critical. Across an installation of this scale, even relatively small differences in positioning could become highly visible when viewed from the ground.

Piece by piece, the team assembled the individual components to create one seamless finished logo overlooking Birmingham.

SUPER HIGH LEVEL.

FINISHED.

The Result

From surveying and removing the existing signage to hand-painting the building and installing the replacement logo, the project demonstrated exactly what specialist rope access can make possible.

A complex, large-scale signage replacement was delivered 152 metres above Birmingham without the need for scaffolding or cranes.

The result was a striking new identity for one of Birmingham’s best-known landmarks – installed piece by piece by our rope access technicians high above the city.
